"Fire and Ice" - Mauna Loa 2022 Eruption
The final visit to Mauna Kea summit during Mauna Loa’s eruption was nothing short of magical. This was the view looking across from the summit just as that first daylight was starting to show up. Some residual snow is seen in the foreground on a pu’u on Mauna Kea.
The 2022 Mauna Loa eruption for me really was the eruption of a lifetime. I was born and raised on the western slopes in south Kona. The previous eruption from Mauna Loa was in 1984, two years before I was born. The volcano then took a 38 year pause before erupting again in 2022 which became the first Mauna Loa eruption of my lifetime.
